Volunteer for the Visayans (VFV) is a registered non-profit, non-government organization located in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines. It is registered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to distribute planned and professional social welfare services to assist underprivileged and undeserved local communities. With every year that passed, VFV strived to reach out and improve the lives of communities and individuals in a manner that is responsible and sustainable and this led to a number of projects initiated under VFV’s three Core Programs: First is the Volunteer Program, which oversees the volunteer projects that VFV collaborate on with local community partners. The second program is the Child Sponsorship Program, which assists needy children from socioeconomically distressed families to remain in school. Finally, the third program is the Community Program which consists both Local Community and Outreach programs across the Eastern Visayas.
Since being founded in 2004, VFV has dedicated itself to contributing towards sustainable developments in the areas of child welfare, community development, education and public health through its broad based social welfare programs. In particular VFV has invested time and resources to develop a number of long-term Community Projects as well as a comprehensive Child Sponsorship Program which combined have led to over 200 children from disadvantaged backgrounds to have the means to go to school and pursue their education.
VFV accepts volunteers in all age groups (though anyone below 18 must have parental consent) and from all over the world (though a working knowledge of English is required). Diversity makes us a stronger program as everyone has unique life experiences and backgrounds that we can draw on. Some placements require specialized skills, but most do not. Our project descriptions will help you determine which placement would be best for you. Our staff will be happy to help you determine which project works best for you and will guide you through the pre-program stage of your volunteer abroad experience.
We understand that poverty in our community cannot be alleviated just through hand-outs. We actively collaborate with other community organizations and local government agencies. We strive to provide comprehensive, multifaceted services that address all aspects of poverty – programs that feed the hungry, keep children healthy, strengthen parental life skills, educate children, and foster optimism for a better future. To address a family’s global needs, VFV provides the family with a monthly food subsidy; provides health care and nutritional lessons; provides the sponsored child with school wear and supplies, academic monitoring, daily tutoring, health monitoring and a daily lunch or dinner; and involves the sponsored child in enrichment activities.
