Lotus Flower Trust is a UK registered charity based in Hampshire, England which helps disadvantaged young people in the remote areas of India. LFT has projects in various cities in India: Leh for Ladakh, Guwahati for Assam, Ramnagar for Uttrakhand, Pondicherry for Tamil Nadu, Jodhpur for Rajasthan.
They build homes, schools and orphanages for poor children, whose parents often live on less than one dollar a day, and who live in the remote areas of India. Thus, they work to bring education and dignity to some of the poorest children in the world.
Volunteers need to be of at least 1 month duration and up to 3 months if possible, to make them worthwhile. They need to be 20+ with good education skills particularly in English, maths and with computer skills. They need to be self-sufficient and able to quickly get comfortable working with the local people. They really have to commit, as too many placements fail because of poor behaviour and lack of interest — they should not be sold as a holiday!
They build schools, homes and similar constructions in remote, rural and often environmentally challenging areas of India.
They have concentrated their efforts in the mountainous Himalayan areas of Ladakh, Uttrakhand as well as supporting the Salt Workers’ children in Gujarat. They work with the local people and all projects utilise local labour and materials which is of great financial benefit to the community, ensuring real ownership of the projects. By using locally available materials, buildings can be sustained long-term.
