Situated in the small village of Basai, some 10km from the town of Ramnagar, the school is in the grounds of a secondary school, built and administered by local NGO, USR Indu Samiti, with whom Lotus Flower Trust has partnered to manage the construction of the residential school and who takes over its day-to-day running.
Currently, there are 63 children at the JSR Residential School, ranging in age from 6 to 16, whom they hope – with the help of the Skills Centre – to send back into their families and local community, armed with skills which will range from simple personal care for the most severely disabled, to being able to contribute to family income or fully support themselves financially.
They need specialist teachers to teach deaf/mute children and to work with children with special mental needs. The facilities are quite basic but the school and staff are extremely welcoming and you quickly forget the conditions when you get involved in the work. Volunteer placement have to be for a minimum of 3 months.
The children registered so far, suffer from a spectrum of challenges from cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, club foot, cleft palate and lip, deaf and dumb, partial blindness through to general mental challenges. Each child has a medical record with photo, family details, diagnosis, medical and hospital record, health and education plan. All the children attend lessons in the secondary school. The Skills centre now offers classes in: cutting, tailoring and toy making, screen printing, machine knitting and embroidery, IT and data entry, plumbing, electrical appliance repairs and wiring, mobile phone repairs, bicycle repairs and beautician treatments. Many of the children are being integrated in society for the first time.
